The first thing you want to do is learn to address the ball correctly. The bigger the club the more you want to spread your feet. When you use a driver, your feet should be spread shoulder width. Then slowly bring your feet together as you get to your middle irons, for instance, when you set up for your wedge, your feet should not be as far apart. Where you position the ball in relation to your stance is important as well. Your driver should be played off the inside of the heel of your leading foot, your five iron should be played in the middle of your stance, and the wedge will be played off the inside of the right heel.
The transition from stationary at address to moving at the start of the backswing can be problematic for a lot of beginner golfers, when you prepare to swing, begin with your shoulder turning slightly, keep the relationship, the triangle formed by your shoulders and hands, intact until your back is facing the target. As you slowly complete the backswing keeping your leading arm straight, make sure that your chin is high enough tlet your shoulder turn under it. Try to shorten your swing a little by not doing a full backswing. Initiate the downswing by, again, turning your shoulder.
There are two transitions points in the golf swing that change from being stationary to moving, this is at address when you are starting the backswing and at the top of the back swing when you are starting the downswing. These are the two bits of the golf swing that seem to cause beginner golfers a lot of problems. Most golfers use a 'trigger' to initiate the transition. You will find it most helpful to use the turning of your shoulders to start each part of the swing.
The next tip for beginners to improve their golf swing is to avoid over-hitting the golf ball at all costs. Trying to hit the golf ball hard causes so many swing faults that consistency in your golf swing will become impossible to achieve. There simply is no need to hit hard for distance, good swing technique works much better without sacrificing accuracy. Distance is determined by the speed of the club head through the impact zone and making good solid impact with the golf ball, and nothing else.
What pro golfers do so well is they hit the ball solid every time. You can do the same, you can do is hit the ball solid every time by not trying to murder the ball, when you over-hit the ball, you might manage a reasonable shot some of the time, but your swing and results will be extremely inconsistent. You will not lose distance if you hit the ball at a solid angle without using your arms and hands for extra power. Remember, when you start the downswing using your hands and arms for power, you will, almost guaranteed, produce a wild golf slice, and once you start slicing the golf ball, you will find it very hard to get rid of it. A golf slice is the most common fault in golf so try and avoid the misery of introducing a slice into your golf swing.
Try and relax your grip before starting your backswing. This tip to improve your golf swing is one that more than half of all golfers would benefit from. It' is such a common problem and one that is so easily cured. Too tight a grip causes tension in your arms and shoulders and causes a lot of problems, not least of which is that it generally robs you of distance, be warned.
Another tip that would benefit most golfers, is not to play beyond your skill level. Too many golfers try and emulate the tour pros and reproduce their shots. They actually expect to manage these shots and are surprised when their shots go completely wrong. Just try lowering your expectations a little and play within your golf capabilities. For instance, choosing the correct golf club for the shot is where a lot of golfers make some fundamental mistakes. If you are trying to make a five iron hit the ball further than you normally would with that club, then use a four iron and stay within your comfort zone.
The last tip to improve your golf swing is a simple one. Whenever you are trying to work on your golf swing, change one thing at a time and evaluate it's effectiveness before changing anything else. If you find the change beneficial, then take the time and trouble to ingrain the new change into your muscle memory before trying to introduce any more changes into your swing. Of course, you could just take holiday at a golf resort and sort out all your golfing problems there, just look at all the games of golf you can have, and have a lot of fun with your golfing buddies or family while you do it.
